Ever since I was young, I’ve despised hearing “it’s just the way things are.” If that’s true, what are we working towards? To live just to live is the merest survival.
Why are we, like Sisyphus, endlessly rolling the rock up the hill? And so we spawn and fulfill a biological purpose, and now we can say, “I live for the children!” but that is not a foregone conclusion. If we didn’t take care of them (if we didn’t want to, luckily many do), we would be demonized. So then we get to the point where there is no inherent form — a rock can be sat on as much as a chair. There’s no inherent meaning to life but that which we give it. And so there is a multitude of reasons for being, given by each person on this planet. The Journey is about finding YOUR meaning. Why are YOU here? What do you want to DO with your life? The more you learn, the deeper you explore, the better informed your decisions. In the end, to posterity, are we just the choices we made? Do you want to accomplish anything? BE something?

While most of my friends have made resolutions to finally eat healthier and go to the gym more often, I have found myself at a point in my life where I no longer feel like these goals are enough on their own. I mean, how many years in a row have you promised yourself that you would start eating healthier and exercising more often, only to crumble by mid-March Don’t get me wrong, I am well aware that eating healthy and exercising are critical in terms of longevity, appearance, and overall self-confidence, but I would like to think that there are a few key ways for one to achieve and stick with such goals. Or at least, here are the ways that I envision myself actually sticking to them: 1. Live a more purposeful life 2. Be a Giver 1. I woke on the morning of December 31st with my first thoughts being about my current state of happiness and how I can work to achieve a greater sense of self-love and self-worth in 2016. To me, living a purposeful life is about living each and every day with a mindset geared towards productivity and happiness with both yourself and those around you. Living purposefully is about living with the drive to succeed, to be a good friend, a good neighbor, and an active member of society. To live with the acceptance of your own mortality. Sure, we all think that we are good friends, we are tolerable (isn’t that enough?) neighbors, and that we participate in society by giving back by doing thing such as paying taxes. Yawn. Living purposefully is so much more than that, and it is so much more exciting, too! It’s about embracing the unexpected and adapting to each and every challenge that comes your way. To live purposefully is to live with an open mind, an open heart, and the will to change things for the better. As far as carrying on goes, I know quite a bit about that. I lost my mother in 2011, and I think of this year as the breaking point for me. Every bit of comfort I had felt from her was gone. She ceased to exist, and I ceased to feel the same comfort and the same warmth that I had felt while she was alive. I was trying to finish college, I was trying to find an internship... and BAM! Everything I knew and loved was torn away from me. I broke. I can honestly say now, that in 2016, I am finally coming to terms with the loss of my mother. Though I can never get over it, I can grow from it, and this is exactly what she would want me to do. So, from here on out, I choose to live a more purposeful life for myself, my family, my friends, my mother, and my world. 2. I first read Lowis Lowry’s, “The Giver” in fourth grade, and I can still to this day claim that this was the book that changed my life for the better. This year, I am vowing to finally allow its impact to completely and wholly purpose me to live a life dedicated to the well-being and happiness of others. I will strive every day to give to my fellow humans the gifts of compassion, understanding, wisdom, help, friendship. With both of these goals in motion, I can most definitely see myself eating healthier than I already do and e̶x̶e̶r̶c̶i̶s̶i̶n̶g̶ running more often that I already do. Happy New Year, everyone! Also posted to Medium. It's about time that I post to my blog, right? This empty space just for me that is supposed to contain my current thoughts on life, and all things technology, has been barren for far too long.
Why? Well, there are far too many reasons to count, and I would rather not bore you with a single one of them. The year 2016 has arrived and it is time for a brand new chapter to unfold. So come with me on this journey if you so wish. Or don't. I would rather you stick around for awhile because technology is only going to get more fascinating and my life more exciting! |
